Research Associate, Future Tense

Future Tense, an innovative collaboration between New America, Slate magazine, and Arizona State University, is seeking a full-time Research Associate in Washington, D.C.  Future Tense (“the Citizen’s Guide to the Future”) explores the impact of emerging technologies on society through a series of public events and published articles on Slate’s website.  The Research Associate will be an employee of Arizona State University.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, organized, and curious individual interested in the ethical, cultural, and policy implications of new technologies. The topics we cover range from robotics, information and communication technologies, synthetic biology, augmented reality, space exploration, and more. We’re looking for someone eager to help us facilitate smart conversations on these subjects, both online and at our live events. 

The Research Associate will work directly with the Future Tense program directors and editors, and alongside researchers at ASU, Slate, and New America. The Research Associate will assist in the preparation of conferences and other events, as well as in the production of related content for the Future Tense channel on Slate.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing and facilitating large-scale conferences and other events.
  • Provide support maintaining and expanding Future Tense’s community of event participants and attendees, via social media and other communications.
  • Perform administrative and logistical duties relating to the program’s finances and event organization.
  • Research topics explored by Future Tense programs.
  • Staff public events.

Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Proven research and analytical skills
  • Comfort working in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to use Google Drive and other collaborative platforms for scheduling, document sharing, maintaining spreadsheets and forms, etc.
