Assistant Editor

New America is seeking an assistant editor to work at the intersection of policy and journalism by helping translate nuanced ideas into accessible (but still smart) articles, essays, and op-eds. This is an ideal experience for an intellectually curious person who is interested in writing; editing; traditional, new, and social media; and who is able to work both autonomously and with a driven and dynamic team at a forward-thinking institution full of individuals as compassionate and kind as they are frighteningly competent. Previous occupants of this position have been published in The Atlantic, Slate, Pacific Standard, and others, and they have gone on to jobs at CNN, the Washington PostForeign Policy, and Ideas42. This position is mainly editing and placing great writing.

  • Commission, edit, produce, and write articles for New America's magazine, the New America Weekly, under the guidance of the Managing Editor. Each issue of the Weekly is comprised of six to eight original articles (800-1200 words) and the occasional cross-post (often from local journalism non-profits with which this person is responsible for maintaining relations) on the politics and policies of the day. Writing should be by both internal (staff and fellows) and external (academics and journalists) authors. This person is responsible for commissioning and editing the pieces (under the supervision of the Managing Editor), sending them out in newsletter form to New America subscribers, and sending them out for consideration to syndication partners (a group this person is responsible for maintaining and growing).
  • Help to draft and edit and them pitch staff and fellow's op-eds
  • Cultivate contacts at outside publications to support syndication efforts, including publications outside Washington and New York
  • Work with communications, events, and production teams as needed (i.e., for copy editing, program outreach, annual report)
  • Organize and oversee monthly editorial meetings (to teach less-experienced staff useful editorial skills and review programs' activities for coming month)

  • Two to five years experience in journalism or a relevant field
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven aptitude and interest in digital journalism
  • Ability to thrive in a complex, multi-focus, fast-paced, team-oriented work environment
  • Enthusiasm for lifting journalism and policy work in places outside of Washington
  • Knowledge of, and/or interest in, public policy issues preferred
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Ability to be a self-starter, and to complete tasks without constant guidance
  • Sense of humor and grace under deadline pressure
  • Knowledge of AP style is a plus
