The Education Policy Program uses original research and policy analysis to solve the nation’s critical education problems, serving as a trusted source of objective analysis and innovative ideas for policymakers, educators, and the public at large.

New America’s Education Policy Program seeks a policy analyst who will work on disability policy in education, beginning with early learners and extending into higher education and the workforce. The policy analyst will analyze education data, legislation, and programs, and conduct research projects to identify promising approaches and policy solutions to ensure children, youth, and adults with disabilities have access to well-prepared educators, effective instructional approaches, and equal educational and employment opportunities. Additionally, we expect the policy analyst to help effectively communicate ideas to policymakers, educators, the media, and other key audiences, including through writing compelling policy papers and participating in public events.


  • Research and report on a wide array of disability-related policy issues in education and employment.
  • Conduct research and analysis of federal, state, and district education policy and its intersection with the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Gather and use evidence of effective programs to develop new policy proposals and recommendations.
  • Author and assist in publishing policy briefs, reports, and other documents for the general public, policymakers, the media, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute content to New America’s education blog and digital magazine.
  • Assist the program team in conducting events, including panels, conferences, and symposia.
  • Develop relationships with other organizations and experts working on similar issues.
  • Attend external events and meetings on behalf of the Education Policy Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 3-5 years of professional education policy and/or research experience required.
  • Knowledge of PreK-12 education policy issues, particularly those related to students with disabilities.
  • A master’s degree in public policy, education policy, or related fields, or an equivalent level of knowledge and experience, required.
  • Strong qualitative research and data analysis skills required.
  • Writing and editing abilities that span a variety of different styles and audiences: blog posts, in-depth policy research, opinion journalism, and more.
  • Ability to proactively engage and support workplace dialogue about equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Lived experience with disability preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills—candidates should have the ability to prioritize work and manage time on multiple projects and tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively—candidates should be self-motivated, but also enthusiastic team players open to feedback and collaboration.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Curiosity, eagerness, and ability to develop new knowledge and skills.
  • Some travel required.

Location: DC preferably, remote possible

Compensation & benefits

The salary range for this position is $63,024 – 78,780, depending on years of experience and demonstrated competencies. In addition, our compensation packages include generous health and retirement benefits and paid time off, including 20 days in your first year of employment.
