The Education Policy Program uses original research and policy analysis to solve the nation’s critical education problems, serving as a trusted source of objective analysis and innovative ideas for policymakers, educators, and the public at large.

New America’s PreK-12 program seeks a policy analyst who will conduct research and analysis of education funding inequity in public education.

The policy analyst will conduct in-depth analysis of school funding data sets and translate research findings into accessible, compelling written analysis and public presentations. The analyst will work in coalition with community and advocacy organizations to advance an agenda of education funding justice at the federal, state, and local levels, including proposing legislation, providing technical assistance to policymakers, media relations, and building public support for reform.

Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct rigorous, in-depth analysis of federal, state, and local data sets, including information on school revenues, expenditures, student demographics, school district boundaries, taxable resources, housing, social services, student achievement, and other factors.
  • Adeptly combine information from multiple large data sets, analyzing data using statistical software systems, GIS systems, and other analytic tools.
  • Investigate how public policies provide unequal opportunities to public school students, with an emphasis on Black, Hispanic, and low-income students, students with disabilities, and historically underserved communities.
  • Write accessible, in-depth policy reports communicating data and policy analyses to policymakers, media, educators, and the public at large.
  • Develop partnerships with other organizations and experts working on similar issues.
  • Attend external events and meetings on behalf of the Education Policy Program.
  • Assist the program team in conducting events, including panels, conferences, and symposia.

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in education policy, data analysis, education research, or related fields
  • Candidates should have significant experience in conducting in-depth analysis of large data sets, including merging data from multiple sources and conducting statistical analyses using appropriate software and methods
  • Strong writing skills
  • Knowledge of K-12 education policy issues, particularly those related to school finance
  • Excellent organizational skills—candidates should have the ability to prioritize work and manage time on multiple projects and tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively—candidates should be flexible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic team players.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Curiosity, eagerness, and ability to develop new knowledge and skills.

Location: DC office (currently working remote)

Compensation & benefits:

The salary range for this position is $63,024 – 78,780, depending on years of experience and demonstrated competencies. In addition, our compensation packages include generous health and retirement benefits and paid time off.
