Part Time Research Assistant - Better Life Lab

New America’s Better Life Lab is seeking a Research Assistant for the Better Life Lab’s senior fellow for paid leave policy and strategy on a part-time (20 hours/week) basis through March 2020. This is a part-time position working under the direction of the senior fellow. This position can be completed remotely, but the fellow must be available to meet in person or confer with the senior fellow on a regular basis. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about federal policy across a range of topics in service to the senior fellow’s research agenda and to engage in real-time policy, research and advocacy work related to paid family and medical leave at the national level.



  • Research the substance and circumstances surrounding the enactment of several pieces of federal legislation and possibly do some follow up interviews with people involved;
  • Analyze key features of state paid leave laws and related topics and prepare fact sheets and graphics to present information relevant to current policy discussions at the federal level;
  • Provide research support and quality checking assistance for testimony, op-eds, reports and other publications;
  • Monitor presidential and U.S. congressional campaigns for discussion of paid leave and related issues and help design products to utilize this information


  • Graduate or advanced undergraduate training in political science or public policy, or current graduate student with enough capacity for a 20/hour per week position
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of public policy work; familiarity with economic justice, labor, gender equity and/or social insurance issues is a plus
  • Proven research, writing, editing, and analytical skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience writing about complex issues in an accessible manner
  • A quick learning curve, knack for details, sense of curiosity, empathy, and flexibility
  • Able to prioritize tasks, take initiative to identify new areas of inquiry related to research topics and provide quick turnaround against deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and instruction at times
  • Attentive to instructions provided and willing to ask questions on projects as they arise
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office products including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with data visualization is a plus
  • Exercise sound decision making skills and resourcefulness in the performance of job duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
