Deputy Director - New Practice Lab
The New Practice Lab (NPL) works to improve family economic security and wellbeing – through the way social policy is designed and delivered. We believe good policy design focuses on families’ lived experience and prioritizes making a difference in people’s daily lives.
Too often families accessing support are caught trying to navigate broken, inadequate, or outdated systems. We need to meet people where they are and develop and deliver policies that are truly responsive to families’ needs.
The New Practice Lab approach is:
- People-centered. We believe people who will use or be affected by policies should be included in honest conversations about design, testing, and implementation.
- Focused on family economic security and wellbeing. While the new practice can be applied to many issues, our focus is on improving the economic and wellbeing of families. While families come in many different shapes and sizes, our current work focuses on vulnerable households, especially those with young children as families with children are overrepresented among American households living in poverty.
- Date-driven, committed to learning and improving. Trying out policies while using real-time data and feedback from families and service providers allows policymakers to learn, adjust, and put policy into action sooner.
The ideal candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a passion for addressing economic and racial inequities through better public policy design and delivery. This person will be a highly competent, flexible leader who can contribute across a wide range of functional and substantive areas in a quickly-changing, start-up environment within a larger, established think-tank, and who can grow and evolve their management responsibilities alongside the Lab as it grows. We are seeking candidates excited to improve the way policy is made for American families by rolling up their sleeves, implementing a “new practice” and learning in collaboration with community, private, nonprofit and public sector partners.
Responsibilities: The Deputy Director will be a senior leader who will work as a close partner to the Lab’s founder/senior director to ensure the ultimate success and impact of the Lab. The Deputy will have three primary areas of focus:
- First, the Deputy will ensure that NPL operates as a high-performing team, which they will do by directly managing the operations manager and possibly other members of the team; overseeing cross-cutting team communication and coordination; managing complicated streams of work involving projects, budgets, and fundraising; acting as a liaison to the broader New America team; developing and implementing strong performance management practices; and acting as our Chief Talent Officer, leading and coordinating the recruitment, retention, and development of our staff.
- Second, the Deputy will help translate the Lab’s vision and objectives to target outcomes that are used to guide the work on an ongoing basis, and will support the team in assessing strategic alignment between potential projects and the Lab’s core strengths and objectives. This will support the Lab’s overall strategic focus and help optimize performance as it develops and executes certain priority lines of work.
- Third, the Deputy will be a senior partner on the substance of our work. They will engage directly with our policy and design teams to contribute to the success of projects under their purview, act alongside our founder to cultivate relationships with our partners and potential funders, and from time-to-time directly lead our efforts to seize new opportunities and deliver for partners.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Ten years related experience.
- Has led or organized teams towards a common goal or outcome.
- Is experienced in briefing senior organizational leaders and communicating effectively through written and verbal communication.
- Experienced with non-profit budgeting and fundraising.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Execution: Strong project and people management skills, able to oversee and add value on a high volume and wide-range of work, stretching from policy-related to the administrative side
- People-skills: High emotional intelligence and effective at building relationships across all levels of an organization to generate trust and translate ideas to action
- Presence: Ability to effectively communicate and cultivate relationships with high-level internal/external stakeholders
- Policy: Familiarity with modern approaches of applying data science, continuous improvement design, and rapid learning in the policy context
- Flexibility: Able to continuously learn and adapt in the face of ambiguity
